St Germain-de-la-Serre

The chapel of St Germain-de-la-Serre near Cesseras is perhaps the most intact representative of the Romanesque style chapels of Hérault. It dates from the XII century and was once part of a large priory. Restoration work was undertaken in 1950 using the original stones. The apse has a very good example of a Lombard band, a series of small arches below the roofline. This style of decoration is typical of early gothic and Romanesque churches. There are small amounts of decorative black basalt, possibly from the area round Agde, far to the south-east. The lauze roof sports a good crop of weeds!

St Germain

When I visited in autumn 2008 the chapel was locked. There are occasional musical events during the summer.
