St Roch

This XIIc Romanesque chapel was once attached to the now ruined chateau. It is perched on the isthmus of a peninsular above a dramatic meander of the river Jaur at the edge of the village of La Voulte. The plain building has a semi-circular apse and a side chapel on the south side. It has a small bell wall housing a single bell. From the peninsular, the chapel stands high and proud against the backdrop of the massif of Le Caroux. The Caroux is also known as "Cebenna". Cebenna was, according to legend, one of the last Titans condemned to die and be turned to stone by the gods of Olympus. Her profile can still be seen in the outline of the mountain of Le Caroux. Cebenna is the Latin name for the Cévennes and Le Caroux is one of its southernmost outliers.

The chapel is normally locked but there are occasional musical concerts held during the summer season.
