St Jean de Dieuvialle

This chapel, near St-Jean-de-Minervois, is in a remarkable site. It is also known as the Église du Trou. It is near the bottom of a limestone gorge a good walk from the nearest village, Barroubio. The present building was built in the XIII century but a previous hermitage or chapel existed on the site in the X century. It would have originally been roofed with stone flags ("lauzes") but has been recently re-roofed with pantiles. The buttresses still have lauzes as coverings. The cemetery was still in use in the 1980s. Inside the vaulting of the roof can be seen. The XIII(?) century painted and sculpted altarpiece shows St John and St Peter (holding the key to the gates of paradise). There is also an attractive statuette of the Virgin and Child.

When I visited in September 2008 the building was open.
