St Pierre de Rhèdes

This ancient church dates from the XI century. It is built in typical romanesque style on the site of an even older church of the VI century. The architecture and decoration are striking with a Lombard band round the apse and black basalt features around the doors and windows. Above the main door is a row of carved grotesque heads and above them three small towers. The south door has intricate decoration above (the tympanum) and carved capitals to the supporting columns. There is a primitive carving of a figure, possible a saint, in one of the Lombard arches.
