Sue Boal - Painting in the South of France

I paint landscapes in the beautiful South of France. My latest exhibition, presented in March 2016 jointly with other local artists, is Feu, Terre et Eau, (Fire, Earth and Water).

I am interested in abstract painting and am now beginning to evolve landscape into abstract by combining the detail and essence of the landscape to create shape, colour, texture and space in abstract as an expression or interpretation of the mood of a landscape.
External reality becomes distorted, removed or irrelevant but it continues to exist in the spirit of the painting.

The Chinese term for 'landscape' is made up of two characters meaning 'mountains and water'. Painting can be described as poetry without words, as an expression or interpretation of the mood of a landscape. I try to create the experience of poetry in a painting and compose for each picture a unique Japanese haiku.

Haiku is a form of poetry which describes seasons and the beauty of nature. The form of the poem is based on measured syllables. The first line has five syllables, the second has seven and the third five.

Each poem has only three lines. Here is an example:
Perfect Autumn Day, (5 syllables)
Reflects mellow, ochre tints. (7 syllables)
Crisp Leaves fall softly. (5 syllables)

I paint in oils on linen canvas and have exhibited my paintings in various locations in Languedoc. You can see the list of exhibitions by following this link. Follow the links below or click the thumbnails on the left to see the paintings.
