Paintings of Collioure and various Castles and Châteaux
The Lane, Collioure
Size 65x50 cm
Collioure, le port
Size 61x46 cm
One of my favourite places, Collioure has a unique atmosphere. I love the warm, relaxed Spanish feel of the town and the quality of light that reminds me of St Ives. I softened the light to gold to try to communicate that feeling in this painting.
La Rue de Mirador, Collioure
Size 65x50 cm
Nightfall, Carcassonne
Carcassonne Lorsque Descend la Nuit
Size 65x50 cm
The golden light softens the old stones of Carcassonne. This peaceful citadel is now popular with tourists but its weathered stones retain the memory of sieges and suffering.
La Cité, Carcassonne
Size 55x46 cm
Violet tinted cones pointing skyward, Carcassonne has a bloody and tragic history. Carcassonne was besieged from 1st to 15th of August 1209 during the early phase of the War against the Cathars of the Languedoc. The siege followed soon after the Crusaders' massacre of the entire population of Béziers, an act of terror designed to subdue the people of the area. These massive stone walls must have seemed to provide a safe haven for these poor souls.
Le Château Bas, Boussagues
Size 61x46 cm
This is a rare 12th century Château-Fort in the listed, fortified, medieval village of Boussagues. I painted the Château for Nigel and Maggie. They both worked hard to restore it and it is beautiful. See their website.
