Aeshna cyanea - Southern Hawker - L'Aeschne bleue

Description

The males are dark brown with green spots, the last two segments of the abdomen have pale blue bands. The females are similarly marked but without the blue colour. This is a large dragonfly which may be seen well away from water. It is sometimes encountered hawking along woodland rides. It is noticeably unafraid and will hover in front of an observer as if watching him!
