Calopteryx virgo - Beautiful Demoiselle - Caloptéryx vierge

Description

A distinctive, large damselfly with inky blue-black wings in the male and translucent brown wings in the female. This species prefers clean, fairly fast flowing streams and rivers. The subspecies found in this region is meridionalis which has wings inky to the tip with a clear base.

Observations

30/06/2004   Solitary male at Lac de Vezouls, Hérault (34).

20/07/2006   30-100 males and a few females seen on vegetation alongside the River Agout at St Pierre d'Espinouse (34)

24/05/2007   2 or 3 males near the River Orb at Hérépian

22/06/2007   10-30 males but no females seen at the Lac de Bourdelet (near Vésoles)

10/07/2008   3-10 males at the Parcours de Peche on the R. Gravezon, Lunas

16/05/2009   Half a dozen males and females in small streams in Lunas.
