Gomphus pulchellus - Western Clubtail - Gomphus gentil

Description

A greenish-yellow and black marked dragonfly with blue eyes. Its abdomen is not particularly swollen near the tip. Found by large ponds and lakes from mid-May to August.

This male specimen caught an Orange White-legged Damselfly (Platycnemis acutipennis) and landed on my shorts to eat it! Photo taken at Lac de Bourdelet, Riols (34) - July 2006

Observations

26/05/2004   A single male resting (typically) on the ground near Lac du Salagou, Hérault (34).

13/06/2004   Solitary male near Lac du Salagou, Hérault (34).

08/07/2004   Solitary male on gorse bushes near Lac du Salagou, Hérault (34).

19/06/2006   Solitary male on rocks by the River Orb at Hérépian (34)

20/07/2006   Solitary male at Lac de Bourdelet, Riols (34). The insect was observed catching and eating a male Orange White-legged Damselfly Platycnemis acutipennis.

22/06/2007   Solitary male seen at the Lac de Vésoles
